Dear Immigration New Zealand

Hello there,

My name is Mengfei Liu, most people here in New Zealand know me as Ming Liu. I have been living here for almost 5 years, with a Chinese passport. I think it is time for us to settle this down, don’t you think?

Now, I know you have got heaps of questions for me and I have not been ready to answer you yet.

“What’s your highest education and did you finish it in NZ?”

“Are you married to a Kiwi and lived with them for a certain amount of time?”

“Are you bringing your family with you?”

“How much money do you have?”

“Do you live in Auckland?”

“Have you collected enough points to apply?”

Dear Immigration New Zealand, will you please hear me out?

…. I am so sorry, I just want to live here where all my friends are.

Auckland has taken both my heart and my virginity, took away too much time away from being with my family and too much money. But somehow you want more of me… What more do you want from me? What more do you want me to prove to you how much I want to live here?

Well, my Kiwi friends laugh at me. They ask me why the hell I want to live in New Zealand, well, I do not know what to say to them. I do not know the answer… Is it the drinking culture? Is it weed-smoking? Is it the flat whites? Is it the people? Is it the overpriced rent? Is it the chill vibes? Is it NZ wine? I don’t know…

But I know that I feel the most like home when I am living in my small flat in Mount Eden.

So dear Immigration NZ, what do you think? Anything else I can do to make you want me?

Please do let me know, I look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Mengfei
